Dim sum and a [pounds sterling]70 billion supermutual for afters… HOW THE BRITANNIA AND CO-OP MERGER PLAN WAS HATCHED IN A CHINESE RESTAURANT

Dim sum and a [pounds sterling]70 billion supermutual for afters HOW THE BRITANNIA AND CO-OP MERGER PLAN WAS HATCHED IN A CHINESE RESTAURANT

0 Comments | Mail on Sunday (London, England), The, March 1, 2009

Byline: The Interview BY JEFF PRESTRIDGE

FOR regulars in the popular Chinese restaurant it was just another Wednesday night enjoying good food, decent wine and excellent company.

But barely noticed in the corner of the Cinn Oriental in Wilmslow, Cheshire, were two casually dressed, unobtru- sive middle- aged diners eating sive middle-aged diners eating chicken teriyaki and dim sum who between mouthfuls were secretly plotting a groundbreaking financial deal that would send reverberations through the country’s mutual sectors.

The result of that dinner conversation, which took place last July, should come to a climax late next month when one of the diners, Neville Richardson, gets the goahead from his customers to merge his Britannia building society into the mighty Co-operative, creating the first UK merger of mutuals from different sectors.

The [pounds sterling]70 billion ‘supermutual’ business that will emerge from the marriage of the Britannia and Co-op’s financial arm will be led by Richardson, 51. David Anderson, 54, the current chief executive of Co-operative Financial Services and Richardson’s dining companion that summer’s night, will stand aside.

Richardson says that ‘nothing, absolutely nothing’ will distract him in his mission to make mutual history. Not even rumblings of discontent among a minority of Britannia’s three million customers over the hastiness of the deal, the society’s poorish 2008 results, announced last Thursday – profits slumping from [pounds sterling]69.3 million to [pounds sterling]5.4 million – and concerns over redundancies will dissuade him from the path he has chosen.

Indeed, he positively bristles when I use the word ‘poor’ to describe Britannia’s results. ‘Well our figures are [pounds sterling]24 billion better than Royal Bank of Scotland’s,’ he brusquely responds, referring to the announcement made the same morning as Britannia’s results that RBS made 2008 losses of [pounds sterling]24.1 billion.

‘And remember, our profits are reduced by the fact that we will be handing out [pounds sterling]19 million of bonuses to customers to reward them for their loyalty to us,’ he says.

Profits were also reduced by [pounds sterling]58 million of losses on loans and [pounds sterling]57 million of exposure to failed American bank Lehman. As for the [pounds sterling]19 million of membership rewards, it is a fraction of payments made in previous years.

‘Look, whichever way you look at it, the merger has to make great sense,’ he says sitting in the Longton room at Britannia’s sprawling – and rather ugly – headquarters in Leek, Staffordshire, looking dapper and relaxed as befits a man who last year received total remuneration of [pounds sterling]489,000 (an 11 per cent increase on 2007).

Like many of the meeting rooms at Britannia’s main offices, the Longton gets its name from one of the 60-odd building societies that Britannia has absorbed along the way in its 153-year history.

‘The two businesses that will come together have different strengths,’ he argues. ‘Like most building societies, Britannia is strong in mortgages and savings but we don’t offer a current account. Co-op fills this void.

‘Similarly, our internet offering is also weak while Co-op has the successful Smile brand. On general insurance and personal loans and credit cards, we only offer these products through arrangements with Legal & General and HBoS. Again, Co-op is strong in these areas

Although the exact cause of fibromyalgia is not yet known, its painful symptoms include chronic muscle pain and stiffness.

Countless studies have shown that antioxidants play some part in reducing the number of cancer cells in the body. Because of this, people who are at risk for cancer often use grape seed extract. It is believed that the antioxidants in grape seed extract neutralize cell mutations that lead to tumor formation. It is hoped that by taking grape seed extract, the progression of common cancers such as lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer and skin cancer can be halted.

All of them will require a learning

by admin on Jul.29, 2010, under Uncategorized

All of them will require a learning curve to use properly and effectively.

1 ? Online Advertising

Traditional advertising still exists. There are many owners of websites who would be more than willing to sell you space on their site for your own site?s promotion.

You will need to learn how to determine the value of this kind of advertising. How much traffic is generated? What kind of traffic is generated? Does the traffic convert to sales? Is it worth the money being spent?

2 ? Online and Offline Word of Mouth

This is basically a free form of advertising. The concept is simple, if you know enough people and tell them, they in turn tell others and so forth. Before long many people are checking out your website.

Another similar technique which is an electronic method of spreading the word is thru the use of forums.

After application, immediately wash hands thoroughly

by admin on Jul.29, 2010, under Uncategorized

After application, immediately wash hands thoroughly with soap and water. Use a make-up wedge when applying at the backs of your hands in smooth even strokes as well as on your feet and between the toes. Apply the tanner using both horizontal and vertical strokes or circular motion.

When using a spray tanner, avoid saturating it. Instead, spray and blend quickly and thoroughly over one body part then do the same to the rest of the body. After making sure the tanner is applied evenly, wait for about one hour before applying any moisturizer or foundation or going swimming/bathing. Also, avoid contact with carpets, fabrics, clothing, and furniture. If necessary, and for a deeper tan, repeat process.

A very important reminder for you: Stay away from the sun from 10:00 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon.

Judge: No early Hamm testimony

0 Comments | Pantagraph; Bloomington, Ill., Oct 14, 2005 | by Edith Brady-Lunny

CLINTON — Amanda Hamm’s account of how her three children drowned and how hard prosecutors can push her for that information will have to wait until her former boyfriend’s murder trial.

Hamm, 29, and Maurice LaGrone Jr., 30, each face nine counts of first-degree murder in the September 2003 deaths of Christopher Hamm, 6, Austin Brown, 3, and Kyleigh Hamm, 23 months. The children drowned when Hamm’s car sank into Clinton Lake, but Hamm and LaGrone, who were present, say it was an accident.

LaGrone’s trial will begin in February in McLean County.

Lawyers for the prosecution and Hamm and LaGrone were in court Thursday to argue two motions concerning Hamm’s testimony. DeWitt County Circuit Judge Stephen Peters denied both motions, saying he will wait until the trial begins before making decisions on Hamm’s testimony.

One was a defense request for Hamm’s testimony in advance of LaGrone’s trial, and another was the prosecution’s request to treat Hamm as a hostile witness. Calling Hamm a hostile witness could allow prosecutors to question Hamm in a more aggressive manner and force more information from her.

Special prosecutor Roger Simpson argued against the defense request for Hamm’s testimony.

“There is not a dress rehearsal where she will know what the questions are,” said Simpson.

If she exercises her constitutional right against self- incrimination, prosecutors will offer her immunity in exchange for her testimon, Simpson said. That means nothing she says at LaGrone’s trial could be used at her’s.

In arguing the hostile-witness motion, Simpson said the state cannot vouch for Hamm’s veracity as witness.

“She’s given multiple versions of what happened Sept. 2, 2003. She either has difficulty recording things in her mind and relating them back to law enforcement and friends or she’s a pathological liar,” said Simpson.

The fact that Hamm is facing the death penalty makes her a hostile witness, said the prosecutor.

“I can’t imagine any party who would be more hostile

Contacting other website owners and

by admin on Jul.28, 2010, under Uncategorized

Contacting other website owners and asking them to exchange links with you is a good strategy. The sites linking to you should not be your competitors, but should be related to your site. For example, a bike repair shop would benefit by exchanging links with a bike trail site. Page Rank is a good indication of how valuable a site would be as a link exchange partner. Yahoo and Google each have a page ranking system. When arranging a link exchange, make sure that your important keywords are included in the anchor text. Search engines use anchor text when they try to figure out the relevance and importance of your web pages.

“It’s not the destination. It’s

by admin on Jul.28, 2010, under Uncategorized

“It’s not the destination. It’s the journey.” I’m sure you have heard something like that before.

Be it “destination” or “journey”, I have learned something along the way: happiness is more of a choice than I first realized.

In the past I tended to think happiness would naturally follow if I…

Attained a certain set of goals.

Or succeeded at certain things.

And I’ll admit, I often experienced a measure of happiness as a goal was accomplished or I succeeded at something that was important to me.

But over time I noticed a pattern: the happiness didn’t last. I felt like someone who won the 100 yard dash. I’d win, feel the joy, and go on to win again. And again.

The problem was holding on to that “winning feeling” between races.

I found myself wanting more.

I wanted to feel joy on a more consistent basis.

I longed to experience happiness more — and chase it less!

In other words, I wanted the kind of happiness that didn’t require me to attain something in order to have the feeling.

A BREAK THROUGH…

I have now come to the realization that, for the most part, I can choose to be happy on a daily basis.

There is a measure of truth in the old saying, “Fake it till you make it.” Granted, it doesn’t work all the time.

However, if “fake it” means choosing to think and act in a variety of “happy ways” before I actually have those feelings, then I would have to say I agree.

Take a simple smile, for instance.

I’ve found that something as simple as smiling can do wonders to help me see that I have in me the ability to choose to be happy.

LIVING IN THE MOMENT

I believe one of the best things we can do is to live in the moment: it does wonders when it comes to cultivating a life filled with ongoing happiness.

Taking the time to reflect and be grateful for the things we have accomplished can also have an enormous impact when it comes to lifting our moods.

I’d strongly encourage you to take breaks during the day.

Take small, bite-sized breaks to ponder those happy memories that you’ve collected in your life.
